The remarkable growth of the mobile games market.

At the end of April 2016, Newzoo released data which shows the global gaming market is well on course to a take in a total of $99.6 billion in revenue. This figure represents an 8.5 per cent increase compared to that in 2015.

This means that for the first time, mobile gaming is worth more to the industry than its PC-based counterpart. PC gaming is still no slouch in terms of revenue though. In fact, it is on course to bring in a whopping $36.9 billion. In doing so, it will increase its own worth by 21.3 per cent.

Gaming bringing about a ‘huge power shift’

A huge power shift in consumer gaming trends is tipping the balance of power in the global gaming industry. Many cite the success of casual gaming as the reason for this.

Yet mobile casino games are also doing their bit, as huge revenue continues to pour into this section of the market as consumer trends show an increase in online slot games such as classic bar slots and other slot related games becoming more favourable compared to 5 years ago. In fact, some insiders predict that the online casino segment will outstrip the standard gaming site by 2020.

Yet perhaps the strength of the mobile gaming market lay in not being limited to a specific segment, demographic, or even country. Indeed, both emerging markets (China, India, Brazil) and those dubbed ‘mature’ markets in the west (US, Europe et al) are seeing massive growth year on year.

Southeast Asia and China are the main catalysts for the global growth in both iOS and Android revenues. In fact, China’s growth is up 86% on last year.

China alone accounts for 50% of gaming revenues in the Asia-Pacific region; it’s market size is anticipated to be $24.4 billion in 2016.

The PC market in China has slowed. In 2016, revenues have increased by a steady 4%, compared to 16% in 2015. With this in mind, it is clear that mobile games are the true catalyst of industry income. Indeed, this segment is actually growing faster than previously predicted; its $10 billion in 2016 up a massive 41% on the $7.1 billion from 2015.

Tablets defy reports of a slump

In spite of a supposed slump in tablet sales, these devices remain the preferred medium for online gaming. Stats show that rather than succumbing to a rise in PC sales, consumers like having four screens (TV, tablet, smartphone, PC) on which to play games, surf the web and more.
